What constitutes american gastronomy apart from the fast food culture?
America is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Americas has numerous restaurants serving every ethnic cuisine in many price ranges in most cities and towns. We also have some of the best restaurants and chefs in the world. In New York City and San Francisco alone there are over 50 restaurants that have been awarded Michelin stars (french rating system). There are hundreds more 3+ star restaurants in the USA, that are rated by Zagat and other U.S. restaurant rating agencies. The USA has probably attracted more chefs from around the world to open restaurants than other country.
